JERUSALEM - Palestinians welcomed the initiative of France who filed
an international conference on Middle East peace, which was previously
rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"We certainly welcome the initiative of France, we see it as a great
possibility to challenge the status quo," said advisor to Palestinian
president Mahmud Abbas, Hossam Zomlot, quoted by Al Arabiya on Friday
(02/19/2016).
Even so, Zomlot asserted that the Palestinians still want the UN
resolutions related to the construction of Israeli settlements in any
peace process.
"No one can convince us that we do not have to go to the UN Security
Council over Israeli settlement construction," said Zomlot, a senior
official in the Fatah Party, the party of Palestinian President Mahmoud
Abbas.
Before the French ambassador to Israel, Patrick Maisonnave, met with Israeli officials to outline the initiative. France proposes establishing a support group of permanent members of
the Security Council, some Arab and European countries and international
organizations.
This support group will work in two stages, the first meeting without the warring parties and then take them to the conference.
